Used for the past 6000 years, the gum or resin of the Boswellia tree, grows in Africa, India, and the Middle East. This resin incense derives its name from old French franc encens (high- quality incense.) The word francin old French means noble, pure. This was how the word Frankincense was coined.
The Boswellia tree starts producing resins when it reaches 8-10 years of age, tapping is done 2-3 times a year with the final tap providing the best tears with higher aromatic properties. There are various qualities of frankincense, and they depend basically on the time of harvesting. The opaquer the resin, the better is the fragrance quality. The resins are then graded based on this quality, traditionally and by hand.
Boswellia Serrata is a moderate to large branching tree belonging to the from the Genus Boswellia, this tree grows in various parts of India. Frankincense finds elaborate usage in Ayurveda and said to cure a host of illnesses.
Backtrack
Resin based incense has a history of universal usage, across all ancient civilizations. Resin incense have documented usage as early as 601 BC, it was a very precious commodity back in the day. Trading in incense was flourishing and the route between Arabia to the Mediterranean was called the incense route.

It took them just one appearance to create a lifetime impression. ‘The wise men from the East’ that was what they were called, the three magi could have been astrologers, scholars, teachers, religious leaders, or just priestly advisers, but were called kings. After following a bright star from the east, until it stopped, the star guided them to what they were looking for, a newborn baby. That day was called ‘Epiphany’. Upon finding the baby the magi knelt and offered baby Jesus the gifts they had carried with them, Gold, Myrrh and Frankincense. The relevance of these gifts is documented as: Gold, a gift for a king; Frankincense, a gift for a god; Myrrh, as to one who is mortal.
This was the most glorious day in resin incense history.
Incense and Ayurveda
Ayurveda meaning the ‘science of life,’ is a natural system of medicine practiced for more that 3000 years in the Indian subcontinent, Ayurveda finds use for resin incense in all forms, and they are known to cure a host of ailments.
The Asthanga Hriduya (the essence of eight sections of Ayurveda) is one of the primary root texts of Ayurveda. In chapter 2 of these texts there is special mention of resin incense, recommending burning Frankincense and Myrrh to cleanse the lungs.

Resin incense formed by the hardened secretion of trees, are farmed, and collected using a method called ‘tapping.’ This method is most effective as it does not affect the wellbeing of the host tree. The secretion from these specific set of trees slowly hardens into raw incense resins, totally natural with no additives. In their natural form without any burning agents, they are dependent on external burning agents to produce fragrant smoke.
