A gum resin extracted from a small thorny species called Genus Commiphora, this secreted resin is Myrrh, a truly amazing resin. The word Myrrh corresponds to the semitic root m-r-r meaning ‘bitter.’
Myrrh in its many forms is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, it is said to be very effective for ailments relating to the heart, liver, and spleen. It is also said to enhance blood movement. Myrrh is Chinese medicine find internal and external use.
Ayurveda and Myrrh share a very long and strong bond. Due to its strong rejuvenative properties Myrrh is used in ‘Rasayanna.’ A breakdown of this word is, path ‘ayana’ and essence ‘rasa’ , an early ayurvedic medical term referring to the methods used to lengthen the lifespan and invigorate the body.
Myrrh has been used extensively by the ancient Egyptians across all rituals especially mummification. It also finds mention in the Hebrew Bible as a rare perfume. Myrrh was a key ingredient in ‘ketoret’ a consecrated incense used in the first and second temple of Jerusalem. In the New Testament Myrrh has documented evidence of being gifted to baby Jesus by one of the three wisemen.
According to the Islamic herbal medicine the hadith, “the messenger or Allah stated, ‘Fumigate your houses with al-shih, murr and sa’tar.’”

It took them just one appearance to create a lifetime impression. ‘The wise men from the East’ that was what they were called, the three magi could have been astrologers, scholars, teachers, religious leaders, or just priestly advisers, but were called kings. After following a bright star from the east, until it stopped, the star guided them to what they were looking for, a newborn baby. That day was called ‘Epiphany’. Upon finding the baby the magi knelt and offered baby Jesus the gifts they had carried with them, Gold, Myrrh and Frankincense. The relevance of these gifts is documented as: Gold, a gift for a king; Frankincense, a gift for a god; Myrrh, as to one who is mortal.
This was the most glorious day in resin incense history.
Incense and Ayurveda
Ayurveda meaning the ‘science of life,’ is a natural system of medicine practiced for more that 3000 years in the Indian subcontinent, Ayurveda finds use for resin incense in all forms, and they are known to cure a host of ailments.
The Asthanga Hriduya (the essence of eight sections of Ayurveda) is one of the primary root texts of Ayurveda. In chapter 2 of these texts there is special mention of resin incense, recommending burning Frankincense and Myrrh to cleanse the lungs.
